When an aircraft landing on a carrier hooks the wire stretched across the deck it has to be stopped smoothly in a short distance but not so abruptly that it damages the airframe. This diagram shows the mechanism, normally unseen below deck, that accomplishes just that job using an extraordinary mix of swiss-watch finesse and brute force.
